byways is a home, not an institution. It strives to promote independence and empowerment amongst its residents.

Set in the quaint village of Odiham in Hampshire, byways is a service set up over 50 years ago for ladies with learning disabilities.

Residents are supported in their day-to-day activities, such as budgeting their money, making appointments and socialising; giving them greater independence.

All residents are encouraged to get involved in short courses held at local colleges to enable them to develop their skills to cope with independent living.

"I have been supported by staff at byways since I moved here. They help me to budget my money so that I can do activities such as bowling, going to the movies and shopping. All this I have achieved because of the support of byways . I am very happy here with all my friends." Louise

"I like doing things for myself, but when I need help, the staff are always around to support me. When I receive my mail and I do not understand what the letter is about there is always a member of staff to explain it to me. I like living at byways , it's such a wonderful place." Sally

byways
is registered charity (number 1109825) and seeks donations to carry out the activities within the community. Starting this year byways will be demolished and redeveloped into a supported living environment that will give residents greater independence and the same property and tenancy rights as other citizens. The new byways will feature 12 self-contained flats - giving existing and new tenants the key to their own door.

Four private houses will also be built on the land, in order to raise money for the new build. byways will need to raise £400,000 to complete the build (expected to be finished by 2011).
